Todd grew up in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, and has spent most of his working life in the Dallas and Fort Worth area — more than forty years of it in the lighting industry. A number of the people who hire TC Lighting today first hired him twenty years ago, at a different house, sometimes at two or three different houses since. TC Lighting, LLC was established in 2017 and works out of Carrollton across the whole Metroplex.

Ask four things. One: are they a licensed Texas Electrical Contractor? Landscape lighting is electrical work and not every lighting company is licensed to do it. Two: how many night-sets have they actually done? Aiming fixtures after dark is where the craft lives, and it is what lets a designer see the result before anything is installed — Todd has done more than a thousand. Three: is the wiring run in conduit, or buried bare? Bare cable is why most systems start failing around year ten. Four: is every fixture spotted and day-set before installation, with a night-set after? TC Lighting does all four.

This matters more than it sounds: landscape lighting is electrical work, and a great many lighting installers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area are not licensed electrical contractors at all. Texas requires licensed electrical contractors to carry general liability insurance, and a current certificate of insurance is available on request before any work starts on your property. No — and Todd will tell you so with a smile: he can’t see in the dark either. The design happens in daylight, when the property can actually be read. What makes that work is experience: more than forty years in landscape lighting and over a thousand night-sets, which is long enough to know exactly how an uplit live oak or a downlit walkway will look once the sun goes down. He designs from the picture already in his head, then the night-set confirms it.
Moonlighting means mounting fixtures high in a mature tree and aiming them down through the branches, so the light reaching the ground carries the shadow of the canopy. It reads as natural moonlight rather than as a lit yard, and it is the effect TC Lighting is known for across the Metroplex. It is the technique clients name most often in their reviews.
For a mature canopy, downlighting from inside the tree — moonlighting — almost always beats uplighting from the ground. Uplighting a big live oak from below flattens it and throws glare toward the house; downlights mounted high in the same tree put a soft pool of light on the lawn with the branch shadow inside it. On specimen trees with sculptural trunks, TC Lighting combines the two: uplights to read the bark and form, downlights for the ground shadow.
Every fixture, up-light and down-light, is spotted and day-set as the system goes in. A night-set is the pass after dark once it is running — typically one or two adjustments rather than re-aiming the whole system, because the design was already built around how it would read at night. We night-set the majority of our projects; on smaller ones it often is not necessary. Todd likes to be there for it, and to see the client’s face when the property lights up.
Low-voltage cable buried bare is the usual reason a landscape lighting system starts failing around year ten — nicks from edging and aeration, moisture at the splices, corrosion. Running the cable in conduit costs more on day one and greatly prolongs the life of the system. Clients specifically mention it in their reviews.
Often, yes. A good share of our work is diagnosing failing low-voltage systems — shorts, corroded fixtures, leaking lenses, dead transformers — repairing what is worth keeping and converting the rest to LED. Several long-term TC Lighting clients started as a repair call on a fifteen-year-old system.
Most residential projects run a few days to a couple of weeks depending on the size of the property and how much trenching and conduit is involved. You get a start date and a completion date with the bid. Reviews going back years say the same thing: TC Lighting started on time and finished on schedule or early.
